The Pareto Principal - AKA The 80/20 Rule

One rule of life that has been widely accepted as a smart concept in balancing tasks and effectiveness is the 80/20 rule. Also known as the Pareto principal, the concept was invented by Italian economist, Vilfredo Pareto. The principal is basically that 80% of our results or outputs come from 20% of our actions or inputs. The idea is simple, but implementing it into our lives is the complicated part. While I’m doing my best to make this a part of how I life, here are a few tips that may also help you to make this part of your daily assessment.

Make the most of your time
Identify the important activities that produce the results you are looking for. For example, if you have a goal to expose one person a day to your business opportunity, then spend 20% of your daily activities making calls and inviting them. Within a 10 day period you can feel confident that 8 days will be filled with meetings just based on those calls.

So where do you find the 20% of time to devote? Avoid time wasting activities that will not get you closer to the goal. If that same 20% of your day is devoted to surfing the web or monitoring Facebook, then replace those activities. The reality is that making your calls would be easy to do. Reality also is that it's easy not to do. Focus on what's important.

Fight stress
Using the 80/20 rule can help minimize stress. Consider 20% of what you think about or what you do produces 80% of what you feel. If 20% of your daily activities or thoughts have negative, self-doubting, or depressing undertones, your mood will be affected adversely. Consider what produces your stress and eliminate those activities or change them. If you cannot change the activities, change the way you look at the activities.

Make more money
Use this concept to increase your earnings. 20% of your activities produce 80% of your income. This principal also determines where your money goes since 20% of your spending produces 80% of the value we get. Eliminate unnecessary expenses and devote 20% of your money into money-making activities.

Get better relationships
20% of your relationships make up 80% of what matters the most. So focus on the 20% of most important people in your life and improve the relationships you have with them. This can produce 80% of the strongest relationships in your life and increase the bond within those relationships.

Have a happier life

Minimize the activities that cause stress and begin to focus 20% of your time towards the things most important. I'm still learning how to apply this concept to my life. Any feedback or ideas you may have are appreciated!

Who Are You Growing To Be?

We all have the ability to grow into the person we want to be. In fact, for most of us the key to being a successful entrepreneur is going to rely on becoming another person and growing every day.

9 Principals of Leaving Behind a Legacy

84 years ago today a man by the name of Jim Rohn was born. He was respected by many and forgotten by few. His quotes of inspiration provoked thought and left people questioning their own ways of thinking.

"You know me, I am a philosopher. I love principles. Yes, actions are great and I talk about them regularly, but the important stuff is what lies underneath—the principles," -Jim Rohn.

In this article, published by SUCCESS Magazine, he share's his secret to leaving behind a legacy.

How to Leave Behind A Legacy

1. Life is best lived in service to others.
This doesn't mean that we do not strive for the best for ourselves. It does mean that in all things we serve other people, including our family, co-workers and friends.

2. Consider others’ interests as important as your own.
Much of the world suffers simply because people consider only their own interests. People are looking out for number one, but the way to leave a legacy is to also look out for others.

3. Love your neighbor even if you don’t like him.
It is interesting that Jesus told us to love others. But he never tells us to like them. Liking people has to do with emotions. Loving people has to do with actions. And what you will find is that when you love them and do good by them, you will more often than not begin to like them.

4. Maintain integrity at all costs.
There are very few things you take to the grave with you. The number one thing is your reputation and good name. When people remember you, you want them to think, “She was the most honest person I knew. What integrity.” There are always going to be temptations to cut corners and break your integrity. Do not do it. Do what is right all of the time, no matter what the cost.

5. You must risk in order to gain.
In just about every area of life you must risk in order to gain the reward. In love, you must risk rejection in order to ask that person out for the first time. In investing you must place your capital at risk in the market in order to receive the prize of a growing bank account. When we risk, we gain. And when we gain, we have more to leave for others.

6. You reap what you sow.
In fact, you always reap more than you sow—you plant a seed and reap a bushel. What you give you get. What you put into the ground then grows out of the ground. If you give love you will receive love. If you give time, you will gain time. It is one of the truest laws of the universe. Decide what you want out of life and then begin to sow it.

7. Hard work is never a waste.
No one will say, “It is too bad he was such a good, hard worker.” But if you aren't they will surely say, “It’s too bad he was so lazy—he could have been so much more!” Hard work will leave a grand legacy. Give it your all on your trip around the earth. You will do a lot of good and leave a terrific legacy.

8. Don’t give up when you fail.
Imagine what legacies would have never existed if someone had given up. How many thriving businesses would have been shut down if they quit at their first failure? Everyone fails. It is a fact of life. But those who succeed are those who do not give up when they fail. They keep going and build a successful life—and a legacy.

9. Don’t ever stop in your pursuit of a legacy. Many people have accomplished tremendous things later on in life. There is never a time to stop in your pursuit of a legacy. Sometimes older people will say, “I am 65. I’ll never change.” That won’t build a great life! No, there is always time to do more and achieve more, to help more and serve more, to teach more and to learn more. Keep going and growing that legacy!

5 Signs You Are Stuck and Don’t Even Know It

Have you ever felt stuck? Stuck at a bad job, stuck in a bad relationship, stuck in worry about your appearance or lack of physical health, stuck in low confidence, stuck with interpersonal relationships?

I think it’s safe to say that most of us feel stuck at some point in life. We get caught up in a cycle of everyday life and simply continue doing the things we have always done. We get caught up in the lie that “that’s just the way I am” or “that’s just the story of my life”. We hang around the same people, we talk about the same topics, and we wait for happiness to come to us. We wait to see “what life brings us” and never really understand how to break free or that we even have the ability to do so.

1. You feel like life is the same day over and over
Have you ever felt like you wake up, get ready, go to work, come home, do home stuff, go to sleep, and then repeat it the next day? We often get stuck in a pattern of routine and it becomes difficult to escape the treadmill effect that gets us nowhere fast. Getting stuck in tasks and living life reacting to the urgent stuff that happens leads to a lack of fun and fulfillment.

Find what makes you feel passionate and do it every day. This can help develop a positive attitude and break you from the daily routine. Developing your passion will also lead to an increased sense of what your future might hold.

2. You have no idea what to do next or what’s to come for your future
This feeling either comes from a lack of focus, or fear. Fear of the future creates a loss of trust for the big picture of life and creates a sense of hopelessness. Fear is merely the thought of something happening that may or may not be true.

Visualize different scenarios for how your life can go. See yourself where you want to be and create vision inside your mind for where you can go and what it will feel like when you get there. Put yourself in the driver’s seat and recognize that you control where you end up.

3. You are making excuses to avoid change
Coming up with excuses keeps us exactly where we are…and it’s so easy to do. You can have excuses or you can have results, but you can’t have both. Avoiding change means that you have stopped growing and when you stop growing, you start dying.

Change is uncomfortable, and that’s why most people will avoid it – we sometimes get addicted to comfort and being comfortable is the enemy of being great. Challenge yourself to get uncomfortable and start developing habits instead of excuses. A person who wants to avoid something will always have a way to make an excuse while a person who wants to accomplish something will always find a way to do it.

4. You feel unfocused
If your mind is racing from the moment you wake up, there may be too many unproductive thoughts that serve no benefit. It may also be a sign that you are living life dealing with urgent matters, and in a reactionary state of mind. This can be the effect of a lack of focus for what is important. Start a daily regimen of identifying what is truly important and handle the things that are important before they become urgent.

Get out of your usual physical or mental state and create a shock to your system by breaking up your usual physical or mental space. Go for a run, take a cold shower, skip out on coffee, do anything to shock your system to break free from your usual state of being.

5. You feel like you can be a better version of yourself
Is something just not sitting right with you? Do you feel like you were put here for something so much greater? When we get stuck in a pattern that does not serve our highest calling, we limit ourselves from the ability to truly be great. Sometimes we tend to overlook intuition as something that’s “out there” or not tangible, but it can be our true ultimate guide speaking directly to us. Listen to that voice.

Reach out to people you trust and love. Our society over-qualifies the idea of independence and the thought that successful people struggle, sweat, bleed, and cry alone is not at all true. Express your desires and allow people to help you realize them or hold you accountable for moving towards them.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. These are just some simple tips to help get you out of a stuck pattern and begin changing things up in life. Hopefully you can find some value in this post.

A Room Full of Balloons

Once a group of 50 people was attending a seminar.

Suddenly the speaker stopped and decided to do a group activity. He

started giving each one a balloon. Each one was asked to write his/her

name on it using a marker pen. Then all the balloons were collected and

put in another room.

Now these delegates were let in that room and asked to find the balloon

which had their name written, within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically

searching for their name, colliding with each other, pushing around

others and there was utter chaos.

At the end of 5 minutes no one could find their own balloon.

Now each one was asked to randomly collect a balloon and give it to

the person whose name was written on it.

Within minutes everyone had their own balloon.

The speaker began— exactly this is happening in our lives. Everyone is

frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is. Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their

happiness; you will get your own happiness.

And this is the purpose of human life.

Alternative Sleep Cycles. 7-10 Hours At a Time Is Not Necessary?

planetjmac:

Interesting information on the various sleep cycles that humans around the world and throughout history have used. Conventional and mainstream thinking in America says we need 7-10 (some say 8-10) hours of sleep. This is called a Monophasic sleep cycle. I have never been one to believe the importance of a typical sleep cycle with 8-10 hours of sleep as my range has been 5-7 hours of sleep for just about the last 20 years of my life.

Monophasic Sleep Cycle

Most of us are familiar with the Monophasic sleep-cycle. It consists of one large chunk of time that a person sleeps. This is the typical 8-10 hours of sleep in a night:

image

In the Monophasic Sleep Cycle there are various stages of sleep with REM (rapid eye movement) being the most important.

Generally, it takes the body about 45 – 75 minutes to get into REM sleep which is the cycle responsible for various brain and bodily functions that are beneficial to health. In the Monophasic cycle, REM is achieved several times in a night.

Byphasic Sleep Cycle

The Byphasic Sleep Cycle might be viewed as the most practical for people. This cycle consists of one 5-6 hour sleep and one 20, 60, or 90 minute nap per day. A Byphasic sleep cycle might include a total sleep time of around 5.3-10 hours a day.

image

There is now a bit of scientific research to show that this cycle is not only better for your health but can also lead to better moods, a decrease in stress, an increase in your ability to be altert as well as overall productivity when compared to a monophasic cycle. There is also research that suggests this sleep cycle can even make people smarter.

Everyman Sleep Cycle

The Everyman cycle, first named by Puredoxyk, is a sleep schedule consisting of one 3.5 hour core sleep and 3 x 20 minute naps spread out over the day. The cycle is designed to counteract the natural drops in our alertness as dictated by our Circadian and Ultradian rhythms.

image

A sample schedule commonly used with this cycle is sleeping from 9:00PM to 12:30am, a nap around 4:00-4:10 AM, an 8:10 AM nap, and a 2:40 PM nap. A morning core-sleep between the hours of 3:00 AM - 6:30 AM should be avoided because during these times the temporary circadian REM pressure is high and quality slow-wave sleep is unlikely.

Dymaxion Sleep Cycle

The Dymaxion cycle appears to be very difficult. In fact, only certain people can be successful using it. People who have the DEC2 gene generally only require about 4 hours of monophasic sleep. The lack of a DEC2 gene is not to imply that others can’t use a Dymaxion sleep cycle, it is simply unlikely it will work. There is not enough time spent in REM for most people so the cycle is difficult to adapt to.

image

The cycle consists of four 30-minute sleeps throughout the day, totaling a mere 2 hours of sleep!

Uberman Sleep Cycle

The Uberman cycle, again named by Puredoxyk, consists of only 20-minute naps, totaling 2 hours of sleep per day. Each nap is spaced at equal time intervals throughout the day. The classic method is to take six 20-minute naps per day. Eight 20-minute naps can also be used as the extra 40 minutes each day can make a difference.

image

Missing naps while on this schedule can result in feeling very drained and tired so keeping to the schedule closely and consistently is important. Because of the regular interval of naps, typically people do not even have the freedom to try this sleep cycle at all.

Uberman sleepers report experiencing very vivid lucid dreams. This cycle might be worth a try for those experimenting with lucid dreaming.

10 Life Lessons To Unlearn

Ten Life Lessons To Unlearn

At some point you may have learned to believe some of these lessons. You may even believe in them enough to live your life by some them. Or maybe you simply have not been challenged to question these lessons or disprove them.

Here for you to take in and interpret are ten life lessons to unlearn:

1. Problems are bad.
Think of your experiences that created your view of what a ‘problem’ is. School is typically our first structured experience in learning. It is where most of us first applied learned principals and concepts. School teaches problem solving of arbitrary things, typically with one correct answer or solution. We learn to avoid mistakes or risk failure, and many of us quickly learn that problems are just not fun.

Real problems, however, are opportunities to solve or work through life issues while gaining knowledge and learning solutions. Finding solutions enables learning opportunities and experiences that help solve, even avoid, future problems. Just like in school, the more we work through problems the better we get at solving them and the easier solutions will come.

2. It is important to stay happy
Continuous happiness is just not necessary for a person to feel good. Instead of focusing on trying to stay happy during moments of turbulence, remind yourself that it is ok to feel as sad or as upset as you need to be. It is easy to confuse feeling miserable as a warning sign of unhappiness, but granting yourself permission to feel stressed out is very liberating. Unless of course, you fail to release that stress, get over the turbulence, and move forward; which leads into the next lesson to unlearn…

3. I’m damaged by my past and can’t be fixed
Life is made up of many events that we interpret through our own belief systems. We each wear unique sunglasses, shaded by our own observations and experiences. Inevitably, many of us will experience unpleasant and painful events throughout life. These events leave us with permanent scars, bad pictures in our hearts, and negative interpretations that we carry through life. Stories we tell ourselves in our interpretations do not always match the facts of what is really going on.

Our interpretation of past experiences shapes who we are today. The past does not shape who we will become, unless we fail to release it. When we allow ourselves to reanalyze a misconceived belief, maybe by finding three reasons the belief is not true for example, we can immediately change our interpretations and the brain can and will let it go.

4. Working hard leads to success
Play, not work, leads to success.

Work is often something we do out of necessity. We begin on a path of extrinsic learning and develop the necessary knowledge and skills out of habit or repetition, not out of desire and passion. But when we are at play, we are much more interested with intrinsic development and naturally absorb a much broader range of ideas and knowledge through what we believe is enjoyable.

Think of being a child, building instincts, first-learning how to handle real-world situations. Observe the world with curiosity to find where your true passion and expertise lie and pursue a path to get there. Working hard does not always equate to success. If that were true, no one would ever say, “I work so hard and just can’t catch a break!”

Define your own success. What does success look like for you?

And on that note…

5. Success is the opposite of failure
By definition, ‘success’ is the correct or desired result of an attempt at something.

Fact:

We succeed to the degree we try, fail, and learn. This applies to anything from kicking a habit like smoking or drinking, to learning to ski or play a sport. Our success can only come through our effort, mistakes, learning, and improvements. When people worry about mistakes and failure, it leads to shutdown; paralysis by over-analysis. This has been proven in study after study.

Success is built on failure, and people who learn to overcome failure achieve success much easier than those who are consumed with worry over how they will prevent failing.

6. It matters what people think of me
“But if I fail…people will think less of me…”

I’m sorry, but no. Just no.

What other people think of you is frankly none of your business. The number of people who think you’re an idiot would likely surprise you; don’t take it personal. Let go and imagine how it would be if you did not care at all what people thought. That is the ultimate in liberation and freedom and a green light to be whoever you want and accomplish whatever you want.

What people think of you does not matter; ultimately they do not grant or take away your success.

7. We should think rationally about our decisions
Research has shown that the human mind’s rational capacities are actually more error-prone than our own “animal instincts”. Many complex problems can be solved by using basic instincts and thought processes.

For example:

Often times, the value of something goes far beyond the price tag. What makes something special to someone or makes a person feel happy cannot be determined through a basic review of an arbitrary dollar amount. When purchasing something and comparing two items, forget about the tangible pros and cons of the decision. Purchase what “feels” better. Use instincts and ease off the logical roadblocks. Observe the physical responses to each option and pay close attention to when the body tenses or relaxes.

And while we on the subject of bodies…

8. The beautiful people get all the good stuff
I’m sure everyone has an opinion on this, but this is nothing more than a story people tell themselves that is simply not true. Attractive people may get preferential treatment in some of life scenarios, but there is a cost. There is always a cost. In many ways, they may not even be seen for their talents or intelligence. They may end up being “lucky” enough to get hired for their breasts or jawline.

People who get through life solely using their physical appearance often get respect for the wrong reasons, and that’s if they get any at all. Some of them have coasted through life learning to gain off temporary (even artificial) beauty and fail to ever learn how to develop real talent and achieve actual results. And inevitably, life is all about results.

9. If I had all that I wished for, life would be perfect
If you want to believe this is true, simply take a look at people who seemingly “have everything”. Some of the richest, most successful, famous people end up in rehab clinics, divorce courts, jail, some even end up alone in the very end. We have all likely heard stories of lives that spiraled out of control upon coming into riches and wealth, eventually losing everything – even their mental health. Good fortune comes with side-effects.

Simply put, any external thing we depend on to provide “feel-good” also has the same power to swing emotions equally in the opposite direction. Stop depending on tangible rewards as a means of being happy. Instead, recognize and enjoy the happiness around you, stay focused on achieving your passion, and recognize the rewards that materialize. When a person’s true intentions are clear, a mechanism will appear to help you get to and achieve what is desired - almost like magic.

10. Loss is terrible
Like many of the lessons on this list, unlearning this lie can be done the easiest by adjusting an interpretation. For obvious reasons, the word “loss” is associated with negativity. It is the removal of something, or a sacrifice. Loss also teaches lessons and provides the backdrop for humans to get stronger. Loss can teach the heart and soul how to deal with breaking and healing, strengthening the mind in traveling a road to recovering. Do not lower your own value out of fear of loss and always live your truth knowing that you can and will deal with any situation if and when it ever presents itself.

Thank you for taking the time out to read this, I appreciate your support and hope to keep you coming back.
